FAQ /QUESTIONS MOST COMMONLY ASKED
Q-1.... What is Acupuncture and Moxibustion ?
Acupuncture and Herbal Treatment is one of the oldest recorded forms of treatment methods in the word. The Acupuncture method of treatment has been used for over 5,000 years in China & other neighbouring countries. On the other hand herbal treatment began since human being was created. These treatment modalities are still the most commonly used medical procedures in the world. We know that acupuncture, herbal medicine, moxibustion etc. are traditional medical practices or traditional methods of treatment. Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine is recognized as Traditional or Complimentary Alternative Medicine (CAM) by WHO (World Health Organisation) and also recommended for several diseases. The word Acu comes from the Latin meaning needle / pin and Punctura mean puncture. Therefore we have the word acupuncture meaning the insertion of pins / needles into the body. . The acupuncture technique that has been most studied scientifically involves penetrating the skin with very thin, solid, metallic pins / needles that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation and treating by applying heat produced by burning specific Herbs is known as Moxibustion Therapy. The traditional Chinese view is that Qi (energy) flows freely when the body is in a healthy state. If there is a problem then the energy gets blocked and stagnates. So, by inserting small needles or pins at specific acupuncture points on the body the stagnated Qi (energy) is released to flow freely.
Though Acupuncture and moxibustion treatment has already been started in our country but due to quite less number of medically educated qualified acupuncture doctors available in our country and lack of proper perception about the application of this method, the patients are depriving from the advantages of Acupuncture & Moxibustion treatment. An Acupuncture medicine doctor should possess adequate knowledge and experience for providing proper treatment to his/her patients. To avoid the unwanted complications in Acupuncture treatment please stay away from taking treatment by quack / fake Acupuncturist. There are many around us without proper qualifications. Inadequate education, knowledge and experience may lead to serious medical problems.

Because, Dr. Khan has the unique combination of education and experience. No other acupuncture and herbal medical doctor in the country has the comparable education and experience. Because, he studied traditional medicine i.e. acupuncture, moxibustion, herbal medicine at graduation and post-graduation level. Along with this he was also born in a family who practiced Traditional Medicine from generation to generation which enriched him also by ancestor’s traditional medical knowledge. We know that acupuncture, herbal medicine, moxibustion etc. are traditional medical practices or traditional methods of treatment, not a modern treatment. Q-5... How does acupuncture work from a “traditional” point of view?
Traditionally, acupuncture works by balancing the energies of the body. The concept of Qi (pronounced chee) is essential to understanding how acupuncture works. The closest English language translation for the word Qi is “life energy.” When the Qi in our body is in balance, we feel healthy and strong. When Qi is not flowing properly, or when it becomes blocked, many different signs & symptoms of disease may arise. These can include pain, a weakened immune system, emotional difficulties, infertility, and ill health etc. Acupuncture pins are inserted into specific points on the body to restore the normal flow of the body’s Qi. Once the body is in a balanced state, it can heal itself more efficiently.
Q-6.... How does acupuncture work from a modern, scientific point of view?
The Khan’s Acupuncture & Herbal Medical Clinic, Dhaka, Bangladesh appreciates and values Modern & Traditional science, however modern science is still struggling to completely understand how acupuncture works. Scientific studies have shown certain acupuncture points to have effects on the nervous system, releasing/balancing neurotransmitters in the brain, reducing inflammation, pain, and increasing the circulation of blood and body fluids. However, there are gaps in the modern theories that explain how acupuncture can do all of these things. We believe that these gaps will be filled by further research and with the advancement of technology. in our treatment centre we combine traditional theories with modern scientific view to provide medical service to our patients.
Q-7.... Will it work?
Research has shown that 70% of patients gain relief from pain with acupuncture. It does not work for everybody and every condition but, frequently, good results are achieved when other treatment has failed. There is nothing spiritual about it and patients don’t need to believe in acupuncture for it to work. The effects of acupuncture and herbal treatment are cumulative, with a buildup of effects as treatment progresses. Some people are particularly good responders while others may see little benefit until they have had a few treatments; this is more likely with a chronic condition. Occasionally, the condition may become slightly worse at first. This is not a bad sign as it usually means the condition will respond. Treatment aims to help the body balance itself and is not just for the relief of symptoms but for well-being of the whole person.
Q-8.... Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture pins are much thinner than needles (hypodermic syringes) used in vaccinations and injections. The sensation of an acupuncture pin is a little bit like a mosquito bite and this is sometimes followed by a dull, heavy feeling around the pin. Most people are surprised at how little sensation they feel with the insertion of the sterile hair-thin pins we use at our clinic. Most people feel almost no pain at all.
9-Q.... What are the Acupuncture pins like? Can I get infected?
Acupuncture pins are small and hair-thin. They are solid. (not hollow like the needles used in injections.) The end of an acupuncture pin is smooth and rounded. It is not designed to cut the skin. Instead, when an acupuncture pin is inserted, the round edge pushes the tissue aside without cutting it. Acupuncture needles are so thin it's as if they can glide through the spaces between the individual cells of the body. We only use FDA USA (Food & Drug Administration-USA) or competent authorities approved sterile, nontoxic and disposal / personal set pins. These pins are carefully manufactured under the guidance of FDA or competent authorities. So, there is no risk of infection.
10-Q.... How many Acupuncture points are used during a treatment?
This is a very difficult question as practitioners will often use different techniques depending on the condition. A general acupuncture treatment will require anywhere between 2 and 20 points, however in a recent survey most acupuncturists said 10-12 points was the average.
11-Q.... What Criteria Should I use In Choosing an Acupuncturist?
Patients should ask about where the doctor studied Acupuncture. What is his basic medical qualification? Whether he / she is Traditional Medical Graduate or not? (We know that acupuncture, herbal medicine, moxibustion etc. are traditional medical practices. So traditional medicine doctors can perform it much better then others.) How long he or she has been in practice. Ask your doctor does he / she has medical practicing permission / license from the government ? If you are unsatisfied by his answer or If you get resistance, that means you have someone with little or no real training or may be a fake one.
12-Q.... Can acupuncture help my condition?
The best answer will come from an experienced Acu. doctor. The doctor, based on your medical history, condition, and what other treatments you have been or are receiving, can best help you decide whether acupuncture is suitable by itself or as adjunctive therapy. But in most of acupuncture’s treatable conditions these methods helps the patients.
13-Q.... Will acupuncture treatments conflict with my other treatment ?
Definitely not. In fact, acupuncture will enhance the effectiveness of your treatments. For example, when muscles are injured as in the case of whiplash injury or a back sprain, the muscles react by shortening. Shortening of the paraspinal(around spine) muscles will cause increased pressure in the disc. This will cause the disc to move out of proper alignment. Acupuncture works effectively to relax the injured muscles thereby allowing to easier adjust the disc into proper alignment.

15-Q…. What is Cosmetic Acupuncture or Facial Rejuvenation?
Cosmetic Acupuncture is a form of treatment that uses tiny pins, as thin as human hair, on the face, neck, abdomen and body to enhance and renew your skin. I specialize in the technique used in China for face lifts. Cosmetic Acupuncture provides a pain-free, drug-free and natural approach to improve skin quality, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and support not only a healthy complexion, but a healthy body as well.
Traditional Medicine has always focused on health and longevity, which included the physical appearance. In ancient China the Empress, and ladies of the royal court, made use of acupuncture and herbal medicine to maintain their vitality and youthful beauty. In addition, facial diagnosis has been an integral part of Oriental Medicine from its earliest beginnings thousands of years ago. Each of the major organs in the body manifests their state within your complexion. By identifying and correcting imbalances both your appearance and general health can be improved.
Benefits of Cosmetic Acupuncture:
.......... Increase in collagen production, improving the elasticity of your skin.
.......... Remove fine wrinkles in the skin.
.......... Lightening of deeper lines in the face and neck.
.......... Strengthen the facial muscles, helping flatten wrinkles and lift droopy eyelids.
.......... Better define the jaw line.
.......... Increased blood circulation in the face, improving complexion resulting softer, smother & more vibrant skin.
.......... Clear or reduce age spots, rosacea, and acne.
.......... Pain free therapy without the risks and side-effects of surgery.
.......... Improved sense of wellbeing.
.......... Improved sleep, digestion, sex drive, bodily functions, etc.
.......... An overall rejuvenation that is not limited to just your face/neck.
16-Q.... How Does Cosmetic Acupuncture Work?
Cosmetic Acupuncture for facial rejuvenation works by balancing the body and encouraging the flow of blood, nutrients and energy to the face. Over time, the flow of energy in the body can become disrupted and blocked leading to a state of disharmony and stagnation; these imbalances can manifest in the complexion. By supporting a healthy mind and body, you can improve the appearance of your face in a manner that you can both see and feel.
During the Cosmetic Acupuncture treatment for face or neck rejuvenation, tiny sterile pins will be inserted into the face and body to adjust the flow of energy. Additionally, these facial pins are able to increase the tone of the facial muscles, pulling the skin tight and flattening wrinkles. The local insertion of pins into the superficial layers of the skin has been shown to increase collagen production in the local area providing the skin greater elasticity and a more youthful appearance. There is usually no pain for most needle insertion sites.
Q- 17.... What happens during a treatment ?
Initially the acupuncture doctor will spend more than 30 minutes asking about your complaint, such as how long you've had the problem, your current symptoms, your health history, your diet, your sleeping habits, your emotional state, bowel movements, your physical investigation results, if any (like blood, stool, urine, x-ray, ultrasonogram, CT scans, biopsy etc. reports ) and many other information that may seem irrelevant to you - just remember that Traditional Medicine is an holistic medical system that recognizes the link between body, mind and emotions. Your physical ailment may well have an emotional component too. The doctor may exam you physically. This process will also enable the doctor and patient to get to know each other before any treatment commences and to discuss the treatment plan. Follow up treatments will be shorter.
Depending on your problem you will lie on the treatment table face down, or on your back, or on one side. Usually from 2-12 acupuncture points are selected. The most common points are on your arms below your elbows, on your legs below your knees and along either side of your spine from your neck to your sacrum or on scalp. Each point is swabbed with disinfecting lotion before the acu. pin is inserted.
The doctor may ask you to report any sensations of tingling or warmth around the site of the pins. These sensations indicate that the point has been correctly located. Generally, the pins are left in place for about 20 minutes or more. A common acupuncture benefit is that it's usually very relaxing - all you have to do is lie still and it's quite common for people to fall asleep during their treatment.
*As you lie there (eyes closed) breathe slowly, smoothly and deeply through your nose - as you exhale relax and "let go" of your ailment and imagine it leaving your body.
Q- 18.... How long does a treatment take?
The first day of consultation, when a detailed history is taken, along with treatment may take about 1to 2 hours. After the initial treatment, follow up treatments usually go for 20-30 minutes or more.
Q- 19.... Does Acupuncture provide long lasting results?
YES. Acupuncture addresses the underlying cause of disease, not merely the symptoms. When correcting the cause of the problem, in the most cases the results are long-lasting or permanent.
Q- 20.... How Many Treatments sessions will I Need ?
This is a difficult question as the number of Acupuncture treatment sessions needed, varies widely for each person according to the body state. Each person is treated individually and each treatment is unique. Generally 02 to 04 or more sessions of treatment per week can be recommended according to condition. Chronic cases may require treatment for several weeks or longer. Acute problems generally respond much faster. Some conditions may require prolonged treatment over time. Occasional treatments throughout the year are usually sufficient to maintain good health. Your doctor will explain the nature of your problem as well as the treatment plan / possible duration of treatment to you.
Q- 21.... How long will it take to make a difference?
It depends upon your health problem; nevertheless, a single treatment could produce a results or it may take a series of treatments. Some conditions may require many treatments over time. Ask the doctor for an estimate about this prior to beginning treatment.
Q- 22.... What preparations should be made before arriving for treatment?
At first you must arrange an appointment over phone before arriving for treatment at our clinic. Be prepared to provide your medical history, previous medical documents (if any) and list of current medications. Please try to wear comfortable clothing to your treatment. This will allow our doctor/s to be able to access the acupuncture points with ease, and it will help you to feel relaxed. Please try to avoid eating a heavy meal or skipping a meal before coming to your appointment.
Q- 23.... Is acupuncture useful for cancer?
According to American Cancer Society, there is no evidence that acupuncture is effective as a treatment for cancer. However, clinical studies have shown that acupuncture is helpful in treating nausea caused by chemotherapy drugs and surgical anesthesia. Another clinical trial found that acupuncture was effective in reducing the number of hot flashes experienced by men after prostate cancer hormonal therapy. Acupuncture may lessen the need for pain medicines.
Acupuncture is often used as an adjunctive therapy in anesthesia, in post-operative pain control, and in aiding and hastening recovery from the side effects of the various therapies. Acupuncture is effective for control of pain, of local swelling post-operatively, for shortening the resolution of hematoma and tissue swelling and for minimizing use of medications and their attendant side effects. Energetic acupuncture imparts a sense of well being and accelerates patients' recovery. It is used routinely in cancer institutions along with nutritional support in abroad. Energetic acupuncture is routinely used to provide healing energy to diseased organs such as liver, pancreas, kidney, and others that are ravaged by cancer. Researchers at UCLA found that when nutrition and supplements are combined with energetic acupuncture, it boosts the immune response in cancer patients, along with minimizing the immune and white blood cell suppression. In summary, we can say that acupuncture can help in the care of the cancer patient. Source: American Cancer Society
For many people undergoing chemotherapy, the dreaded side effect of nausea and vomiting is more sickening than the chemotherapy itself. A study conducted at the University of Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine found significant reduction of nausea and vomiting when the patients were treated with acupuncture before undergoing chemotherapy. American Cancer Society reports that acupuncture is now routinely administered before, after and in between chemotherapy treatment sessions for control of nausea and emesis. Use of acupuncture helps in minimizing the use of standard, expensive multi-drug anti-nausea regimens with their attendant side effects for chemotherapy patients.
Acupuncture is useful in managing cancer-related pain. The use of acupuncture can reduce the need for narcotic drugs. This also means that acupuncture will minimize the side effects such as confusion, disturbed mentation, behavioral changes, nausea and severe constipation, the normal result of taking narcotics.
